XIX Tallinn Design Festival Opening Show „TAKE RUUM, MAKE RUUM, BAKE RUUM: A Journey of Transformation"
The idea of the opening show is inspired by an empty historical space, where room is made for the new. Old memories are cleansed and aired. New ones are created. In this space, imagination will soon take flight.
One way or another, memories and history have to be chewed through and accepted - face to face with abandonment, desolation and dampness. Then the space can be taken over, the excess cleared away and new seeds planted. Let the space mature. Heat up all the potential with imagination and fantasy. TAKE SPACE, MAKE SPACE, BAKE SPACE - the sort of logical journey towards change. As long as something is happening. The room will be crowded again. Life starts to simmer.
The choreographed lingo of the opening is deeply intertwined with the atmosphere of the building and the sense that the revival of old places is part of the life circle and itself a continuous mill. A living ventilation. Life can be recreated as we dream it. We create space here, we make space here. From empty we create full. And we have hope, if we don't interrupt the crop circle of new ideas. A performance will be given by the musician EiK with the composer boipepperon, and the dance artist Maria Solei Järvet with her poetic vision in the choreography.
Performance, music and lyrics: EiK
Performance and dance artist: Maria Solei Järvet Composer: boipepperoni
Director and concept: Andri Luup
Lightning artist: Helvin Kaljula
Producer: Indrek Leht

Dearest Pinocchio - Italian designers and graphic designers redesign the world’s most famous puppet
The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi is one of the most beloved Italian books worldwide and more than 140 years after its first publication, it still remains a global long-seller.
The exhibition „Dearest Pinocchio“, ideated by ADI Design Museum and curated by Giulio lacchetti, aims to strengthen the multidisciplinary nature of design. In a way Geppetto, Pinocchio’s creator, was the first real Italian designer, as he knew how to grasp the value of a piece of wood to which no one else would give any value.
The exhibition features objects like Pinocchio masks, bottle openers, cutting boards and vases.
The exhibition is promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and organized by the Embassy of Italy in Tallinn in collaboration with the Estonian Association of Designers.

The BRUNO product design award is awarded every two years to an exceptional product or product series, manufactured either at the designer's own initiative, as a collaboration, or as a commission by a manufacturer/entrepreneur. Production-ready prototypes created during the past two years, or industrial products or product series already in production qualify to enter.
In the exhibition you can see the qualified work, which the international jury (Anke Strittmatter (Austria), Susana Gonzaga (Portugal), Stephan J. Clambaneva (USA), Arvo Pärenson (Estonia) and Darren Yeo (Singapore)) rated highly enough.
Three categories - lifestyle, human environment and engineering - can be seen in the exhibition. A total of 99 projects applied for BRUNO this year!
In order to value design and the profession of designer, the Estonian Association of Designers decided in 2006 to start giving out the Estonian Design Award. The first Design Award was given out in the eighties by Tallinn Art Institute Department of Design at the initiative of Bruno Tomberg, after whom the Estonian Design Award has been named. Among the award-winners are experienced professionals like Matti Õunapuu, Heikki Zoova etc.
Starting from 2012, Estonian Design Awards, including BRUNO, are jointly presented in cooperation with Estonian Design Centre, ADC*Estonia, Estonian Service Industry Association and Estonian Academy of Arts.
Estonian Design Centre organises the Design Awards and gala takes place during the Tallinn Design Festival.
The Estonian Association of Designers wishes to present innovative, high-standard new products to the public that would prompt Estonians to consume domestic design and motivate entrepreneurs to involve professional designers in product development. The recognition would encourage designers to create new interesting products and motivate them to learn about tendencies in design on the international level. For the design-knowledgeable entrepreneur participating in the competition with a designer and the public sector, product development from the aspect of design and design management would bring recognition and would be a good role model for others. In the long-term perspective, the Design Award is a springboard for new products and brands to the international arena.

For the past four years, the Estonian Association of Designers has been a partner in the international Creative Europe project "SMOTIES: Creative works with small and remote places", in which universities, centres, agencies and associations from ten countries have been developing spatial solutions by designing creative innovations. How can design be used as a creative tool, adapt it to the context, and then work with locals to bring innovation to public spaces?
The exhibition will showcase such interesting examples of work from the last few years. Stories from different parts of Europe unfold: from the 9th-century Icelandic settlement of Borgarnes to the Natura 2000 area of Apano Meria on the Greek island of Syros. Also a Natura 2000 area is the Estonian remote place: the former industrial village of Joaveski in the heart of Lahemaa, which can be visited on Saturday September 21!
The project is part of the Human Cities platform for interdisciplinary exchange, examining and acting to improve the liveability of indoor and outdoor public spaces to incubate innovative processes for social cohesion through participatory design.
This exhibition goes hand in hand with the Design Forum, where project partners will present their remote places and the changes they have implemented.

The Estonian Design and Architecture Schools Showcase, which has become one of the integral parts of the Tallinn Design Festival, is increasingly important in a rapidly changing world, because aren't educational and research institutions the places where the play between experimentation and tradition "saves the day"? In the shade of various global crises, there is an increasing need for the light of youthful and clever design.
Showcased are the works of the Estonian Academy of Arts (Fashion, Textile, Accessory; Design and Innovation curricula) Pallas University of Applied Sciences, Tallinn University Haapsalu College (Craft Technologies and Design) and University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy (Native Crafts studies).

The focus of the exhibition is the students' creative and analytical approach to the development of the Kalamaja public outdoor space. Students have studied in depth how architectural forms and outdoor space solutions relate to the existing urban space and landscape, creating context-based and functional integrated solutions.
The aim of the Design and Innovation curriculum is to prepare top-level players who are able to meet the challenges of the dynamic labor market, initiate change and lead innovation. The focus of the study is the use of design for successful innovations in all social spheres. The design and innovation graduate is characterized by the ability to transfer versatile practice driven by the needs of the digital and green revolution and the designer's mindset into real life through strong professional skills.

“Curtain Creatures” is EAA's fashion, textile, and accessories students’ exhibition of experimental shapes with the mission of fair, creative and inspiring reuse of leftover materials. In the wake of an increasingly acute problem, this time the authors had to deconstruct curtains and create a new identity for them.
This exhibition gives the visitor the opportunity to actively reflect on critical aspects of consumer society, taking the viewer on an inspirational journey of sorts. A total of around 40 creators contributed to the birth of experimental forms and spatial solutions.

Everyone poops! Feces, or poop, is a metabolic waste product that results from the food we consume being broken down by bacteria in the large intestine. The act of excretion is a natural function of the body. This stigmatized bodily activity can be particularly challenging for individuals with chronic gut diseases (CGD), where the urgency to defecate or changes in bowel habits can be a prominent struggle.
Exhibition “From Waste to Wonder” aims to break down the stigma around poop by reconnecting it with nature and exploring more-than-human connections through multi-sensory engagements with biomaterials.
Arife Dila Demir is a researcher of the Sensorial Design Research Group of EKA, the exhibition is created as part of the 'Multi-Sensory Design for Somatic Care' project supported by EKA's Creative Research Grant.

The list of authors in the museum's collection is nothing short of impressive - the permanent exhibition showcases the works of world-famous artists such as Warhol, Banksy, Koons, Lichtenstein, Haring, Hirst, Murakami, Wesselman, Kusama, and many others. Lapin, Mäetamm, Nukke, Egs, Ivanovs, and numerous young talents are also exhibited in an equally iconic manner.

In this specific site, plants intertwine with natural fabrics reflecting local heritage. An inclusive masterclass engages local community, teaching participants to make ropes from indigenous plants using technique of intertwining separated plant fibers.
These ropes are woven into a decorative belt inspired by the Estonian “kirivöö,” symbolically uniting the different cultures of people and nature coexisting at the location. Through this collaborative process, participants contemplate their lineage and the richness of cultural heritage to foster a deeper connection with the environment.

We stayed in touch with Ave, calling and writing, for eight long years. Laughing at ourselves and laughing at life. Ave loved life and took it all in. That's why the Tallinn Design Festival satellite bears the name keik, which in Hiiu dialect means ‘all’.
Come to Kärdla on September 17 and make the most of the day!

We’ve always been inspired by the interplay of glass and light, as well as the shapes, lines and quirks found in Nature. We now aim to bring them all together in one whole.
Botanical structures display infinite variation. On one hand, there is the admirable, architectural orderliness, while elsewhere, one finds zany, inspiring chaos. Yet, neither is without purpose. Mostly unknown to us, every detail, every biome has a reason for being the way it is.
In our new light objects, we hope to achieve something similar - to set predefined patterns of light, build glass structures and supportive framework that the light can play off of, then enliven them with wacky, quasi-biological constructs whose inner logic remains undeciphered.

SHIRTS AND SKIRTS... IN THE OUTSKIRTS
For years the designer Vilve Unt has observed the dressing habits
of the older generation in the street scenes of small towns and villages,
especially during more festive occasions. It's fascinating to discover how the
best clothes are taken out from the wardrobe, or chest of drawers, and how they
are combined. These ladies are an inexhaustible source of inspiration.
In the interest of sustainability and also drawing inspiration from
ethnography, some high quality garments from previous collections have been put
in use for this new fashion collection.

moomoo
moomoo is a
cycling and xc-ski clothing brand founded in 2013 by the recognised cyclist Allan
Oras. Its mission is to give cycling and ski clubs transparency of
production and providing the best outfit for the maximum performance.
Aside from in-house design the participation
of professional athletes in the product development phase has become an
indispensable contribution. Functional world-class fabrics, Estonian design and
crafting skills come together in a product that lasts and connects people who
love to exercise. The reliability has expanded moomoo's reputation both in
Estonia and abroad.
Matrix Protect
Matrix Protect
is a brand dedicated to the manufacturing and design of high-quality military
and medical equipment for the defense forces of both Estonia and the Nordic
countries. A new perspective on tactical gear is provided as practical function
meets uncompromising quality.
For the brand design is a process, not a goal. Product development is
continuously carried out in collaboration with users – whether they are
representatives of security forces, or medical professionals.
The items are made of the best materials with engineering precision, and
thoughtful attention to the details.

TAILORED SESSION
The days of the designer Anna Viik are divided between individual
orders and on versatile textile projects thanks to her strong technical base
and experience in various fashion houses. Geometric shapes and built-in details
can be considered his signature. Viik has founded the circular economy platform
Stuudio 213, is the production manager for two clothing brands
and is the owner of AG Mood sewing production.
The collection here is not seasonal, but speaks of slow production and the long
life of the garment. Various products have been part of the Anna Viik brand for
10 years.

Abstract and physical, mental and dimensional, natural and created, inspiring and imposing – all these describe the space around us. “Multifaceted Space” by Pallas UAS presents the meaning and interpretations of space as it can be understood in the literal as well as in abstract sense (e.g. living space, exhibition space vs cyberspace, headspace, developmental space).
The exhibition is inspired by the idea of the limitlessness of space – there are an infinite number of ways to give meaning to and create sustainable, aesthetic and environmentally friendly space in various design fields. __________________________________tlu.ee/haapsalu/kasitootehnoloogiad-ja-disain
The Handicraft Technologies and Design program at Haapsalu College focuses on human-centered and sustainable design, emphasizing user needs and creative problem-solving. Students learn to work with materials like wood, metal, glass, and plastics-resins, while also exploring modern technologies and solutions for giving materials a new life.
The curriculum promotes entrepreneurial thinking and values circular economy principles in new product concepts. These are developed from concept to execution, guided by the needs of the target group.

In recent years, many organizations and industries have invested in design to create value for their business, people, and the planet. At the same time, there is an expectation that design will ensure a return on investment and demonstrate its value. The workshop offers a framework to structure aspects of value creation and map out the factors necessary to achieve the desired impact.

The special tour of Tallinn Design Festival will focus on Adamson-Eric’s design and applied art oeuvre at the museum’s permanent exhibition.
Adamson-Eric (1902–1968) is known in Estonian cultural history as a superb painter, but he was also a significant innovator of applied art and design, and brought fresh and modern approaches to the local culture of form. In Adamson-Eric’s oeuvre, design and applied art were mixed with visual arts. In addition to oil painting, he made practical objects of leather, playfully painted porcelain, created glamorous jewellery and designed furniture and textiles.
He developed an idiosyncratic world of patterns by mixing conventional motifs from nature and folk culture with contemporary trends, such as Art Deco, Surrealism and Abstractionism. Adamson-Eric’s applied art and designs have left resplendent marks on the history of Estonian design.

The third season of the lecture series “When is Design?” will be given a start by artist and designer Jüri Kass.
The series presents the work of practising designers and the history of the field will be discussed by professionals who have been active in the field for a time. The series is based on the contradictory processes of constant expansion, delimitation, blurring and formulation of the concept of design.
Design's complexity and change over time is inevitable and fascinating. In order to understand what and when design is, we want to open up the layers of its meaning to a wider audience. The lectures are open to all and recordings can be watched on the museum's YouTube channel.

#multifacetedspace

RUA Street Art Festival’s mission is to bring long-lasting visual art to Estonian small towns and rural areas. RUA stands for Rural Urban Art - the two opposite words - rural and urban - mark the possibility of an urbanistic form of art finding its place in a rural area or small town.
RUA is a nomadic festival which means our location is different every year. Since 2018, during the last seven editions, over 70 wall paintings have been painted by local and international artists in six Estonian regions.
A small selection of works from each year's
edition are presented at the exhibition.
