In 2024, the largest hospital in Wallonia opened in Charleroi, hosting an ambitious art project designed for patients, staff, and visitors alike. Coordinated by Nicolas Belayew and Paul Marique (Pierre Papier Studio) together with curator Corinne Clarysse, the initiative invited fourteen Belgium-based artists to transform the hospital’s shared spaces.
More than 140 wall installations, covering over 4,000 m², were created to accompany daily routines with images rooted in the local context. Far from decoration, the works open the hospital to imagination, give each department a distinct identity through color and form, and ease orientation. These immersive images create poetic pauses that soften the time spent inside and bring sensitivity to everyday hospital life.
Inspired by the territory of greater Charleroi, its surprising biodiversity, and humanist values of care, empathy, and respect, the project demonstrates how art can make a hospital not only a place of treatment, but also of welcome, inspiration, and wellbeing.
